March Video Game Sales Decline

Associated Press

NEW YORK - U.S. video game sales declined in March and were flat in the first quarter when compared with a year earlier, says market researcher NPD Group.

While analysts had widely expected game sales to fall, the double-digit decline was larger than many estimates.

Overall game sales slumped 17 percent to $1.43 billion, NPD said Thursday. Hardware sales fell 18 percent and software sales declined 17 percent.

Of the gaming platforms, NPD says only Microsoft's Xbox 360 experienced higher unit sales. Part of this is because sales of the Nintendo Wii were pushed higher last year by the launch of a popular game, "Super Smash (Brothers) Brawl."
