The Walt Disney Co. is considering paying $500 million for social gaming company Playdom to introduce its characters and brands to the social networking world.
Mountain View, Calif., company Playdom owns the No. 1 game on MySpace, "Mobsters," and boasts other big-name titles including "Big City Life," "Social City" and "Poker Palace," The Hollywood Reporter said. More than 38 million active users are registered with the site.
Disney, already an investor in Playdom, expressed interest in a full purchase of the company after Facebook's "Farmville" game was tagged as a top gaming product at this month's Allen & Co. media mogul pow-wow in Sun Valley, Idaho, tech blog TechCrunch and the Wall Street Journal reported.
Disney is currently working with Playdom to develop social games for ESPN, The Hollywood Reporter said.
