'Deus Ex' QR-Code Social Media Scavenger Hunt

Stanley A. Miller II - Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

'Deus Ex' QR-Code Social Media Scavenger HuntSquare Enix, a video games publisher that just released "Dungeon Siege 3" today, started a QR-code scavenger hunt challenge today to promote its upcoming scifi action-adventure title "Deus Ex: Human Revolution."

The game, available for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Windows PCs, goes on sale Aug. 23

The QR code adventure begins by downloading the "Deus Ex: Human Revolutions QR Missions" app from iTunes. Register for the challenge by logging in with your Facebook account, and you're ready to start scanning codes for the game, starting with visiting the Deus Ex Facebook fan page, which you have to "like" in order to access the tab hosting the QR code. New codes will be released for the next seven weeks, Square Enix says, both online and in physical locations, which will be revealed through the official Eidos-Montreal Twitter feed and the game's Facebook page.

Each code scanned by fans unlocks digital rewards like images and video from the game and secret codes to unlock special doors inside the game.

Code scans also count toward a universal reward for all players -- specifically, Xbox avatar gear or PlayStation Home items. Each code scanned earns 10 points, and if the collective score for all players reaches 1,000,000 before Aug. 23, all scavenger hunters earn a virtual toy for their Xbox Live or PlayStation Home avatar in the form of a "B-EE Chopper," from the "Deus Ex" video game.

The first 1,000 players to find 10 codes get a special console theme (available for sale at a later date) for their preferred platform of Xbox or PS3. And the first 10 participants to collect all 21 QR codes get a prize package packing:

--One copy of "Deus Ex: Human Revolution Augmented Edition" --One pair of custom Deus Ex: Human Revolution headphones --One Square Enix Products Play Arts Kai Adam Jensen action figure

--One "Deus Ex: Human Revolution" limited edition compression sleeve

There are a decent number of moving parts to this QR code hunt: players must be 17 or older, they must be on Facebook, they need an iOS device with a camera, and it's a good idea to be on Twitter, too. But it also sounds interesting and fun for fans of the game, and I am curious to see whether the players earn the universal reward.
