101 Foods That Could Save Your Life by David Grotto (Bantam, $14)
Almonds. Cranberries. Salmon. Such is the stuff that could save your life. The food list alone is old news - who hasn't grabbed a handful of almonds for a quick midafternoon boost? But did you know that almonds are the seeds of a fruit tree that is related to the rose family? This and other fascinating facts are sure to turn trivia lovers' heads and keep them thumbing through this encyclopedia of foods.
The pitch: Eat right and add years to your life. This book not only tells you what to eat but why. Almonds, for example, lower cholesterol and may help your memory. In one study, rats that were fed almonds scored better on memory tests.
What's surprising: It's a lot more than a book about food. Who knew the United States provides 88 percent of the world's supply of almonds? There are also storage tips, recipes and home remedies.
Who wrote it and why: David Grotto is a registered dietitian and spokesman for the American Dietetic Association. He operated his own restaurant for eight years.
What's the payoff: Everything is written in short, easily digestible blurbs so you don't have to finish the whole thing in one sitting. But you just might want to once you get started.
