2013 Housing Stipend FAQ

Higher limits for the VA Loan

The DoD announced the new Basic Allowance for Housing rates for 2013. Most GI Bill recipients will see a modest increase in the Post-9/11 GI Bill Housing Stipend as a result - but not until August 1, 2013.

The following is a quick list of Frequently Asked Questions on how the new BAH rates will affect your benefit.

Be sure to check out the Military.com GI Bill Calculator to see your current 2011-2012 housing rates.

When will VA start paying the 2013 rates?

The VA should adjust GI Bill housing stipends for 2013 in August, meaning you should see any increase in the September 1, 2013 payment.

Do I have to submit a form or do anything to get the new housing rate?

Your payments will update to the 2013 rates automatically, you do not need to do anything.

I started school under the Post-9/11 GI Bill in 2011 and the housing rate for my location will decrease for 2013. Will I get a smaller stipend?

You will continue to receive the higher 2012 rate during 2013 unless you change schools or have more than a 6-month break in school attendance.

My housing rate is the same, is there a change to my VA housing?

Your VA housing payment will not change.
