In his State of the Union address Tuesday, President Barack Obama acknowledged America's Armed Forces for their "courage, selflessness and teamwork." He also addressed two major topics of concern to past and present servicemembers and their families: unemployment and education.

Obama highlights jobs initiatives for veterans

In his speech, Obama mentioned one jobs initiative for veterans already enacted by Congress: new tax credits for companies that hire veterans. He also touched on efforts by Michelle Obama and Jill Biden to get U.S. companies to pledge to offer 135,000 jobs for veterans and their families. In addition, President Obama proposed a Veterans Job Corps to help communities hire veterans as police officers and firefighters.

"As they come home, we must serve them as well as they've served us," Obama said. "That includes giving them the care and benefits they have earned."
