The VA has now made it easier to apply for the GI Bill.

According to the VA's VAntage Point blog, veterans can now apply for most GI Bill benefits on the Vets.gov website, and they can apply using a mobile device.

The application form is much shorter and easier to complete. With just 8 steps, the new application can easily be completed in under 10 minutes. The old form was 4 pages long with an additional 3 pages of instructions that were often quite confusing.

According to the blog post, "some of the improvements to the VA Education Benefits Application include a mobile-first design where the app adjusts to any size screen, whether you use a mobile device or a desktop computer; easy-to-understand 'plain language,' a simplified user interface with large fonts and more white space, and 508 accessibility".

Unfortunately, the VA says that spouses and dependents applying for transferred Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits or Dependent GI BIll benefits will still have to use the older forms on the VA's eBenefits website. But the VA says they are working to modernize those applications in the future.

While the application process has been sped up immensely, the VA warns that it is important to note that existing application processing times have usually taken about 4-6 weeks, and they expect that to remain the same.
