Two people aboard a 48-foot fishing boat were rescued early Monday after heavy weather smashed their boat against the ocean jetties at the entrance to the St. Johns River.
The man and woman from Arlington, Va., were rescued about 2:40 a.m. by a Coast Guard boat crew from Mayport.
The private vessel was pushed into the rocks by the overnight weather, said Petty Officer 3rd Class Anthony Soto.Wreckage has been spotted in a debris field from Huguenot Memorial Park south to Atlantic Beach but is not expected to be a navigational hazard. The Coast Guard has set up a broadcast alert for mariners about the wreck.
The rescued boaters were evaluated by emergency medical workers.
