PORTSMOUTH -- Naval Medical Center Portsmouth was temporarily placed on lockdown Tuesday morning after a sailor was found dead on base, a spokesman said.
Navy emergency personnel at Naval Support Activity Portsmouth responded Tuesday morning to a report of gunshots, said Micheal Mink, a spokesman for Navy Region Mid-Atlantic. A sailor was found dead in a barracks room after failing to report for work, Mink said.At about 9:30 a.m., the grounds to the base and the hospital were briefly locked down for about 15 minutes as a precautionary measure, Mink said.
The Naval Criminal Investigative Service is investigating to determine the sailor's cause of death.
The hospital was unaffected by the incident and is open for business.
