Coast Guard Evacuates Ill Cruise Ship Passenger

Coast Guard boat crew from Station Mayport

A U.S. Coast Guard boat crew from Station Mayport evacuated an ill passenger Saturday evening from the Carnival Fascination cruise ship offshore of Atlantic Beach.

The 56-year-old man was experiencing symptoms indicating a stroke, when the cruise ship's onboard doctor requested the medical evacuation. After consulting with a Coast Guard flight surgeon, it was decided to transport the patient ashore via boat.

The crew of the 45-foot Response Boat-Medium transported the man, two family members and a nurse to Station Mayport, where he was taken in stable condition to the hospital, according to the Coast Guard. Additional information wasn't immediately available Sunday.
