Fort Carson is investigating whether "several" soldiers sexually assaulted minors.
The post won't release details on how many soldiers were involved or where the incidents occurred. A post spokeswoman said Fort Carson is handling the investigation on its own, a possible indication that the incidents took place on the post south of Colorado Springs.
The post won't release details of what may have occurred. Citing unnamed Pentagon sources, CNN reported the cases involved soldiers meeting girls on a dating website who turned out to be underage.
Fort Carson, though, wouldn't confirm the report.
"We assure the community that the Army is taking this situation seriously and updates will be provided as information is made available," the post said in a statement released Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Colorado Springs police say they have opened a sexual assault investigation involving a soldier and an "underage girl."
Police spokeswoman Barbara Miller didn't release details on that case, and it was unclear whether it tied to the cases at the post.
"The investigation is in its preliminary stage at this time," Miller said in an email.
The El Paso County Sheriff's Office and the 4th Judicial District Attorney's Office said they were unaware of the Fort Carson investigation.
The FBI, which has jurisdiction to investigate crimes against civilians on federal land, said it was uninvolved. The military has been rocked this year by a rising tide of sexual assault in the ranks. A Pentagon study found as many as 26,000 troops may have been sexually assaulted in 2012.
At Fort Carson soldiers have been involved in a string of sexual assault cases over the past year. The most notorious case involves 1st Lt. Aaron Lucas, who was charged in November with 21 counts of crimes against children, including luring and sexual assault.
In the latest case, post officials said no soldiers have been confined or detained.
"The command is aware of the cases and is closely monitoring the investigations of these soldiers," the post said in a statement. "At this time, no further details can be released as law enforcement investigations are still pending."
