Army Special Forces Missions

Special Forces have the ability to be virtually everywhere at once; this guarantees that they are the first on the ground or already at a crisis location when trouble starts.

Their missions include direct action operations, unconventional warfare, special recon, and counter terrorism. Their skills and training give them a thorough knowledge of foreign languages, customs and cultures. In addition, they are the masters of training and organizing insurgents, surrogate fighters, native forces and foreign armies.

If you have what it takes to join the Special Forces you could be rooting out insurgents in Iraq one week, training foreign troops to fight terrorists the next, and crossing the globe to liberate the oppressed the week after that.

Joining the Army's Special Forces isn't easy. First you have to prove you are worthy of the Green Berets by completing some of the toughest military training in the world. Are you motivated to be the best? Are you determined to succeed? Do you have what it takes to be part of their elite team? If so, then take the next step and learn how to become a member of the U.S. Special Forces.

Army Special Forces History

U.S. Special Forces — also known as the Green Beret — trace their roots back to the WWII Office of Strategic Services. The OSS was formed to gather intelligence and conduct operations behind enemy lines in support of resistance groups in Europe and Burma.

In the Global War on Terrorism Special Forces teams have helped oust the Taliban government in Afghanistan, trained and fought along side the Kurds in northern Iraq, cleared the western desert of SCUD missiles, and provided long-range special reconnaissance to coalition ground forces on the drive to Baghdad.

Called the "Quiet Professionals," Special Forces units are deployed worldwide displaying their dominance in unconventional warfare and living up their motto: "De Oppresso Liber — To Free the Oppressed."

To join the military, one of the first challenges you will have is to show that you have some basic knowledge and skills by scoring well on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB). The ASVAB is made up of several verbal, math, and technical tests. You will need a strong combined score to be considered for a special operations MOS, but while the military can get you into peak physical performance, YOU need to train your mind by using the tools provided in our ASVAB section.
