Spy Term of the Day:

Defector in Place

Defector who denounces his or her country but does not leave. Usually such a defector chooses to become a mole, remaining in a place where valuable intelligence can be given to another country. Among the significant Soviet defectors in place during the Cold War were Col. Oleg Penkovsky and Oleg Gordievski. Their opposite numbers from the West included Guy Burgess, John Cairncross, Harold (Kim) Philby, Donald Maclean, and Edward Lee Howard.
