Comments: USS Worden Reunion Newsletter May 3, 2007 I can feel the excitement building for our reunion in Louisville (June 21st to June 24th). The purpose of this newsletter is to provide an update on the reunion progress and to detail the activities that are planned. So, let?s get started: From our experience in planning a reunion we look back to ?lessons learned? and the comments you have provided. Some of these comments included the desire to have enough activities/things to do. This is why many have liked to keep our reunion in Las Vegas. Other comments included the desire to have more group activities for our crew. This can best be provided in a smaller town. We looked at our success in St. Louis and felt that a Midwest venue gives more of our shipmates an opportunity to attend. What we have developed is an ambitious agenda based upon your comments. The agenda provides group activities that we hope will be interesting and fun for all. Thursday June 21st. 1:00 PM to 5 PM: Registration and greetings in our hospitality suite. Our hospitality suite is on the top floor of the Hotel with a view of downtown Louisville. We will have an open bar and snacks. 5:00 PM to 6:00: Housekeeping and welcome to Louisville. We will discuss our planned excursions and provide information on transportation to the various venues. 6:00 PM to 11:00: Hospitality room will be open to continue being reacquainted with our shipmates. It is encouraged to bring your pictures and memorabilia to share. Friday June 22nd. 9:00 to 11:00 AM: Group meeting and an opportunity to introduce ourselves to our shipmates and retell memories of our time on the USS Worden. 11:30 AM: We board our transportation to Churchill downs for lunch. http://www.churchilldowns.com/ 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM: Lunch at Churchill Downs on Millionaire Row; tour of the museum; and free time to walk around and place your bets. 6:30 PM: Board our transportation to the Louisville Riverbats for the game with Pawtucket. http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/index.jsp?sid=t416 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM: We have USS Worden day at the ballpark. Check out the above web site to see more about the park and the game we will watch. 10:00 PM: Return to the hotel. Saturday June 23rd. 9:00 to 11:15 AM: Group meeting to plan our next reunion and to elect new officers i.e. President, Secretary, Treasurer, and your reunion committee. 11:30 PM: We take our transportation to the ?Belle of Louisville for a two hour tour? (no Gilligan Island, sorry Ginger fans) 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM: We take a ride up the Ohio River. http://belleoflouisville.org/ Food can be purchased on the Belle. 2:15 PM: We board our transportation to the Louisville Slugger Museum and Bat Factory. 2:40 to 4:00 PM: Tour of the Museum and factory. http://www.sluggermuseum.org/ 4:00 PM: This is the end of group activities. Free time is given to explore ?Fourth Street Live? in downtown Louisville?s entertainment and food district and other downtown venues. 7:00 PM: The hospitality suite will be open. Sunday 24th This is check out and goodbyes. Now that you have had a look at the agenda I hope you?re excited and looking forward to making it a reality. Let?s look at the details to make this happen. Friday?s activities and costs. Here are the options that we looked at Churchill Downs: Turf Club (private): $10 fee and reservations one week in advance, $22 buffet, includes admission and program, business casual (no sneakers, jeans, shorts, collar shirts). Millionaire's Row: tables of 8, $40 lunch on the 4th floor, $25 lunch on the 6th floor, includes admission and program, 50% down payment (non-refundable) with advance reservations, full payment 30 days prior to event, casual dress.. General admission $2. Programs $2. Boxes of 6 are available for $10 per person. Food is sold throughout the track. Museum: $7 group rate with a one hour to one and a half hour tour around the museum, paddock, garden area and winners circle. An Insiders Tour is also available for an extra $10. It is an hour and a half and it tours Millionaire's Row, the media center and jockey's quarters. Louisville Riverbats: The Riverbats will provide us a group rate of $6.00 per person. They require a $100.00 deposit now and full payment two weeks before the game. They have offered a catered dinner for an additional fee but they have a pretty good food court so I think we can leave food purchases up to you. Saturday?s activities and cost: The Belle of Louisville will cost us $14.00 per person. While they do not require prepayment it would be helpful if we all had our tickets before we arrive so we can walk on board and not have to wait in line to purchase our ticket. The Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory will be $8.00 per person. If you have a current Military ID then the admission is free. Payment will need to be made the week before the tour. So, what was the $50 dollar registration fee that we paid for? As you noticed we needed to have transportation to the various venues and we wanted to have a hospitality suite that offered an open bar and food. Out hope is that we can offer a continental breakfast on Friday and Saturday morning. It will also be used to pay for cost of our newsletter. Summary: Churchill Downs lunch and activities: $25 for lunch on the 6th floor. $8 for the museum and tour of the track. Riverbats Ball Game: $6.00 Belle of Louisville Riverboat ride: $14.00 Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory: $8.00 per person. It is free to current Military with their ID. This also works for those who have retired as long as you have your ID. Please identify which activities you would like to participate in by completing that following form and return it to me with your check made out to: Dewey Franklin. 8974 S. Rosemary Lane Pekin IN 47165 Activity Number of Tickets Total $ enclosed Lunch at Churchill Downs $25 per person Churchill Downs Museum $7.00 per person Belle of Louisville Riverboat ride. $14.00 per person Louisville Slugger Bat Factory and Museum. $8.00 per person if you are not current military or retired with an ID. No money needed if you are active duty or retired. It is my hope that you will join us for all the activities and please don?t forget to send your registration fee of $50 to our Treasurer: Dennis Royer 39 East Walnut St. Ephrata, PA. 17522 Your Comments are always appreciated.
