Daniel O'Connell!

Daniel O'Connell was one of Ireland's greatest national leaders. Born in 1775 in County Kerry, Ireland, to an aristocratic family, he experienced discrimination against Catholics firsthand. He became a lawyer and in 1823 formed the Catholic Association, which successfully fought for election reform. His political career began when he was elected to Parliament. His election led the British government to eventually grant Catholic Emancipation. He continued to fight for Irish independence and was jailed for sedition. He later came into conflict with the younger generation of Irish nationalists and left Ireland in 1847.
Daniel O'Connell was a practical leader. He worked within the British system of government to effect considerable reform in British policy towards Ireland. His experience in the French Revolution caused him to trust diplomacy and negotiation and argue against the use of violence to achieve political ends.
