Biography:

Charles de Gaulle was France's greatest leader of the twentieth century. A professional military officer, De Gaulle fought with distinction in World War I in the infantry. After the war, he tried to modernize the French army, with little success. When France lost to the Germans in World War II, De Gaulle fled to London to lead the French resistance in exile. He entered Paris at the head of one of the earliest liberation forces, and when France was liberated, he became head of the provisional government. De Gaulle later became Prime Minister and led France through the tumultuous changes of the post-World War II period, including the withdrawal from North Africa.

Leadership Attributes:

De Gaulle was an idealist, convinced of his mission and his ability to accomplish it against all odds. When he declared himself head of the French resistance, he had only a handful of supporters. Moreover, he was virtually unknown in France and international diplomatic circles. A career military professional, he relied on force rather than diplomacy. He left France in disgust when an armistice was proposed with Germany.
