U. S. Coast Guard
October 07, 2004

MIAMI -- Coast Guard Sector Miami is overseeing response operations for the grounding of the 546-foot bulk freighter Federal Pescadores, which was attempting to anchor off Port Everglades, Fla., late last night.

The vessel's owners are working with a commercial salvage company to safely refloat the vessel. The Coast Guard will review this plan for final approval, with emphasis toward personnel safety and enviromental protection.

Coast Guard Station Ft. Lauderdale heard the freighter calling commercial salvage at 11:30 last night. The vessel had run aground 750 yards west of the Port Everglades anchorage area .

Coast Guard personnel are onboard the freighter to investigate the incident and oversee salvage operations. Additionally, Coast Guard Air Station Miami is conducting an overflight to assess the situation.

Presently, there is no sign of pollution or reported injuries to the crew.

The panamanian-flagged vessel is carrying 38,500 tons of cement and approximately 30,870 gallons of diesel and 150,689 gallons of crude oil.

Federal Pescadores last port of call was Canakkale, Turkey, which they departed September 16.
