IMAT Contributes to Super Bowl Success U. S. Coast Guard
February 09, 2005
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Coast Guard Incident Management Assist Team is holding a command post exercise at the Adam's Mark hotel this week to test the team's ability to manage a simulated security threat and response in the Jacksonville area.
IMAT members were recently deployed to Jacksonville for Super Bowl security operations and brought with them field experts in management operations, planning, logistics and command decision-making capabilities.
"Some members of the IMAT are already stationed here in the Jacksonville area which made integration even easier. Once in place for Super Bowl Security operations, this versatile incident management team quickly became a welcomed addition to the multi-agency command as they marshaled us through the processes of the Incident Command System. Ultimately, this led to an effective and efficient employment of resources," said Capt. David Lersch, captain of the port and commanding officer of Marine Safety Office Jacksonville.
Typically, the IMAT group is deployed to natural and man-made disasters, as well as, large planned events like Super Bowl XXXIX.
Within the last year, the Coast Guard team has provided important roles in high-profile security missions at the Group of Eight (G8) Summit and both Republican and Democratic National Conventions. IMAT members were also deployed to assist multi-agency organization responsible for coordinating oil spill clean-up efforts over 70 miles of coastline between three states.
The Atlantic Area IMAT was originally commissioned in 2001 and was created to further develop and enhance special capabilities for response management.
