BAGHDAD, Iraq - An American Marine was killed in a roadside bombing while conducting combat operations west of Baghdad, the U.S. military said Friday.

A military statement did not include the Marine's name but said he was assigned to Regimental Combat Team-8 of the 2nd Marine Division. He was killed Thursday west of Baghdad, the statement said.

As of Thursday, at least 1,773 members of the U.S. military had died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count. At least 1,363 died as a result of hostile action. The figures include five military civilians.
