Free Rooms for Some Va.-based Troops
Daily Press, Newport News, Va. | November 16, 2007
Nov. 14--Junior enlisted military troops stationed on Peninsula bases could get a free hotel room for their families visiting over the Christmas holiday.
The Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce's Military Affairs Committee hosts an annual Holiday Rooms program with hotels in Hampton, Newport News, York and Williamsburg. Rooms are assigned on a first come, first serve basis to military members ranked E-6 and below. The troops must be stationed on a Peninsula base -- the Marine Reserve center in Newport News, Fort Eustis, Fort Monroe, Langley Air Force Base, sailors at the Newport News shipyard, Naval Weapons Station Yorktown or Coast Guard Training Center Yorktown. Military bases on the Southside participate in their own program, according to the Peninsula Chamber. Military members who live on the Peninsula but are stationed on the Southside should contact their respective base for information about a hotel program there. Rooms are available Sunday, Dec. 23 to Tuesday, Dec. 25, with checkout on Dec. 26. The Military Affairs Council has been offering this program for more than two decades. Local hotels in the area agree to set aside so many rooms for the program. In years past, there's been more rooms than troops signing up. To register, troops should contact their commanding officer or one of these points of contact for this program: Ft. Monroe Garrison PAO: Earl Richards, earl.richards@us.army.mil LAFB 1FW PAO: Vic Johnston, vic.johnston@langley.af.mil USMC 4th Supply Battalion: SgtMaj Al Tanner, tanneral@mfr.usmc.mil SUPSHIP MCPO: Bob Allen, AllenBL@supship.navy.mil Ft.
