Milblogging.com Tops 1,500 Blogs
Military.com  |  September 15, 2006

Milblogging.com, a website among the largest military web portals worldwide, recently posted its 1,500th military blog - a historic milestone for both the site and blogging at large.

"Reaching 1,500 blogs has been the icing on the cake of an incredible year," said JP Borda, an Army National Guardsmen and editor of Milblogging.com.  "I can't say I'm surprised, but I am very pleased with the response we've had from military bloggers."

Borda's own experience with blogging started in 2004 when he was deployed to Afghanistan.  In 2005, he decided to start a site that aggregated all of the military blogs he had read while deployed.  The popularity of military blogs has skyrocketed as the military community, mainstream media, and American public look to assess progress in the Global War on Terror and elsewhere.  Military blogs deliver perspectives from warfighters, past and present, offering unfiltered, first-hand accounts from the front lines. In addition, servicemembers and families share slices of life on duty or on the home front, covering issues and intensely personal stories that can't be found with traditional sources.

"When I blogged from Afghanistan I had made a connection on the site with my family and friends as well as new readers," said Borda. "So I wanted to continue doing something, but I wanted the right subject matter. And I realized I could consolidate all of the military blogs from all over the place."

Over the last year Milblogging.com has become one of the largest international indexes of military blogs with more than 1,700 registered users from more than 23 countries.  "Obviously, if you build it they will blog," quips Borda.

Military.com, an organization with a history of supporting "soldier journalism," acquired Milblogging.com in 2005.   In February of 2006, Military.com also launched it's own "best of" channel.  MilitaryBlog.com features ten of the most popular milbloggers - the "rockstars" - including DefenseTech, Blackfive, Andi's World, and Op-for.

"I congratulate JP and Milblogging.com for reaching this milestone," said Chris Michel, founder and chairman of Military.com.  "We're committed to enabling soldier journalism.  These bloggers are credible and an important part of our ongoing quest to bring the best, most accurate information to our audience."

Milblogging.com indexes submissions by branch of service, gender and popularity, which makes it easy for users to find their favorite blogs quickly.

"The Milblogging.com mission is to help people from all over the world find the content that interest them in just a few clicks," Borda adds.  "Milbloggers have important things to say and I'm here to help them get the word out."
