Not up to snuff
You are right in saying that National Guard and Reserves are not up to snuff when it comes to combat. It has been well known for decades. The Army and Marines need to change some policies and get more active duty personnel. First of all, it looks desperate for a country like ours to call on the Guard and Reserve for so long. Secondly, they need to start letting people in who just need a chance in life.
Fair play, honor, respect
I spent a total of 32 years on both Reserve and Active duty. I was raised in the mid-west in both cities and farmsteads. I lived under the high vision of “fair play, honor, respect, patriotism, God and country.” I respect the rules and regulations of the Geneva Convention and our Military UCMJ. So why are we STILL holding the detainees from the Iraq War/Police Action in GTMO without being originally charged with a crime and far after the President had announced the War was over? This is neither fair play nor internationally legal. As much as I believe that most of these people fought against us in Afganistan or Iraq, they are no longer soldiers by law and need to be released to an International Judicial Organization. Mr. President: it’s time for you to do what “We the People of the United States” tell you to do... and not do whatever you want to do!
Overseas should get the first shot
When will the BRAC committee begin to focus on closing military installations that are located overseas? Before Americans working on bases within the United States join the unemployment statistics, those foreign personnel working overseas should have the first shot at being unemployed. Of course we need "some" overseas installations, but there are many that could be closed. Let’s start closing bases overseas before we look at those within the United States!
One of the best
Response to the Jeff Edwards column, "The Last Submarine"
One of your newest writers is one of the best. Have you had a chance to read his July 11 piece, "The Last Submarine?" Perhaps you would consider featuring his work for a week so that more of your readers could get a chance to "discover" Jeff Edwards.
If you’re putting veterans first, then mean it
I am a veteran, and have competed for my position at the VA from the ground up. In my small area alone there are three family members, all of whom are not veterans or prior military. The mother (higher grade) was able to acquire two direct family members that had no prior experience or military service as positions at the VA. I have nothing personal against them; it just hurts me that the job was not offered to a veteran. I have reported this to my supervisor, human resources, and the union, to no avail. I just feel that if you have served, done your time, and have an honorable discharge, that you should take priority over a family member with no experience or military background. If you say you’re putting veterans first then mean it.
Ollie North: Great man or disgraced millionaire?
Response to the Oliver North column, "[Anti] Military Operations"
It's apparent that Ollie hit a nerve with today’s article on the media coverage of the military. Ollie is succinct and to the point. Those on the left who write, "Ollie is still a whore," reveal a baseless anger against anyone with cajones enough to oppose the communist, countercultures of our time. Thanks Ollie and thank you Military.com for publishing this great man!
Disgraced millionaire Lt. Col. Oliver North is one of the problems, not part of the solution. When he stood tall before Congress and lied, I was first misled. When he insulted MoH recipient Sen. Dan Inoyue, I was stunned. The Corps had no use for the man who refused responsibility so that his troops couldn't under perform and screw up his fitness reports. His word means about as much to me as those of Richard Nixon, Lyndon Johnson, and George W. Bush. 1,767 and counting.
