A PENNY SAVED: The Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) is a Federal Government-sponsored retirement savings and investment plan. Congress established the TSP in the Federal Employees' Retirement System Act of 1986. The purpose of the TSP is to provide retirement income. The TSP is a defined contribution plan, and the retirement income that you receive from your TSP will depend on how much you have contributed to your account during your working years, and the earnings on those contributions. The TSP offers the same type of savings and tax benefits that many private corporations offer their employees under so - called "401(k)" plans.

GO DEEP: Deep submergence rescue vehicles (DSRV) were developed as a result of the USS Thresher submarine accident in 1963, when all hands were lost. At the time, submarine operating depths greatly exceeded the capabilities of rescue vessels. The Deep Submergence Systems Project contracted with Lockheed Missiles and Space, Co. to produce a deep diving rescue submarine, the first of which was launched in 1970. The primary mission of the DSRV is to provide quick-reaction, worldwide, all-weather capability to rescue personnel from submerged, disabled submarines (DISSUB) of the U.S. Navy or foreign navies at depths up to 2000 feet. The DSRV's maximum operating depth is approximately 5000 feet, and it can be transported by truck, aircraft, surface ship, or on a mother submarine. For a rescue operation, it can dive, locate the DISSUB, and attach itself to the DISSUB's rescue seat. After the DSRV is properly attached to the submarine, the DISSUB's access hatches are opened and submarine personnel can directly the DSRV. The DSRV then detaches from the submarine and transfers the rescued personnel to the support ship. More on Subs...

CAN'T TOUCH THAT: A leading US defense company believes its new anti-missile system can protect civil aircraft against "all missiles in the hands of terrorists", amid increased interest after attacks on planes in Iraq and Kenya. Northrop Grumman says its Nemesis Directional Infrared Countermeasures (DIRCM) system uses laser beams to jam shoulder-fired surface-to-air-missiles (SAMs) that may pose a threat to commercial airlines. PAY YOUR DUES: Formed in 1920 and chartered by Congress in 1932, the million-member Disabled American Veterans (DAV) is the official voice of America's service-connected disabled veterans. DAV is a strong, insistent voice that represents all of America's 2.1 million disabled veterans, their families and survivors. Its nationwide network of services, which are free of charge to all veterans and members of their families, is totally supported by membership dues and contributions from the American public. The DAV's national organization is not affiliated with the government and receives no government funds. Military Associations...

FAIR DINKUM FRIENDS: Although the contributions of the Australian ground forces during the Vietnam War are well known to most Americans who served there, fewer American vets are aware that there was an active Australian air element there as well. In addition to serving aboard the de Havilland Caribou transports of No. 35 Squadron and the Bell Iroquois helicopters of No. 9 Squadron, Australian airmen worked as forward air controllers (FACs), and some pilots, on exchange to American squadrons, flew McDonnell F-4 Phantom IIs. Of all the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) units sent to Vietnam, however, the achievements of No. 2 Squadron verge on the threshold of legend. No bombing outfit in Vietnam accomplished so much with such an old and unlikely looking weapon as the Aussies did with their home-built version of the venerable English Electric Canberra, one of the earliest jet bombers put into production. Nor could any American squadron, good though their personnel were, boast a consistent aircraft serviceability rating of 96 percent. More...

Additionally, the NBDL offers special group discount opportunities to family readiness groups (FRG'S). These will include free tickets to children of deployed military personnel. NBDL teams are also involved in many activities on military bases, including reading events, basketball tournaments, and coaches' clinics. Sports Discounts...
