    Paying Back Premiums Unavoidable
    Stars and Stripes reports that roughly 56,000 servicemembers owe the Defense Department an estimated $25 million for failing to pay premiums for life insurance they did not realize they had. The DoD estimates some 23,000 active-duty troops in dual-military marriages owe the Pentagon. More

    Marine Given Guidelines on Dwell Time
    The Commandant of the Marine Corps recently set a deployment to dwell ratio of 1-to-2. This means that for every four months spent deployed, the Marine will have eight months at their home base or station. The 1-to-2 deployment to dwell ratio applies specifically to active-duty Marines. More

    Mattel Recalls More Toys
    Stars and Stripes reports that Mattel's second toy recall this month affects dozens of toy sets sold at military exchanges. The Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) have pulled the recalled toys from the shelves. Parents will have to contact Mattel to get a refund. More

    Staff Sergeant Promotion Rates
    The Air Force selected 15,130 of 36,608 eligible senior Airmen for promotion to staff sergeant. The staff sergeant selection rate was 41.33 percent. Score notices are available on the virtual Military Personnel Flight and the Air Force Portal. More

    Organization Debuts New Mobile Canteens
    One of three USO mobile canteens recently visited Selfridge Air National Guard Base, Mich. during drill week as part of an effort to reach out to servicemembers who are not often exposed to the USO. The USO is using the new set of wheels to help the agency travel to military installations. More

    Program to Eliminate Sizing Shortfalls
    Sizing shortfalls in clothing and equipment distributed at central issue facilities is soon to be a thing of the past with the new Uniform System for Improved Tariffs (USFIT) program. The USFIT program uses 3-D, whole-body scanners to record the shape of Soldiers' bodies. More

    Reach Out and Read
    Reach Out and Read is a Boston based national literacy program created to make literacy promotion a standard part of pediatric primary care. The organization provides books to children at pediatric check ups. More

    Retired Airmen Teach Cadets
    Air Force Junior ROTC instructors must be retired military from any Air Force specialty with at least 20 years of active duty and have good morale character. All instructors actually work for the school system in the areas in which they teach, and a member's retirement pay is supplemented by the local school board. More

    Navajo Code Talkers Recognized
    The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff recently met with a group of "Navajo code talkers" to commemorate their outstanding service during World War II. The Marine veterans used their native Navajo language to baffle the Japanese during the War. More

    Survival Training to be Required of All Airmen
    Air Force leaders plan to broaden the focus of SERE (survival, evasion, resistance and escape) training for all Airmen due to the threat of isolation and capture for Airmen supporting the war on terrorism. SERE training teaches Airmen principles, techniques and skills to survive and more. More

    Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors
    Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS) was designed to help friends and families who have lost loved ones serving in the armed forces. TAPS was founded in 1992 in Anchorage, Alaska, and has been helping friends and families cope for more than 14 years. More

    Army Releases New Study
    The Army has announced the results of a recently completed study that identified positive, measurable links between Soldiers' use of recreation and Family programs and readiness and retention. Study findings will be integrated into future recreation and Family program resource and marketing decisions. More

    Nominations Sought for Engineering Awards
    The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) is seeking nominations for its Golden Torch Awards now through Oct. 1. The Golden Torch Awards are designed to highlight the accomplishments of distinguished black engineers and technical professionals. More

    Army to Launch New Game
    America's Army will declare war on the fictional country of Ganzia Sept. 27 when it launches "True Soldiers" for X-Box 360, the latest evolution of the popular Army-sponsored computer game. Players create a Soldier, go to basic and advanced weapons training, then deploy to Ganzia. More

    Career Program for Undesignated Sailors
    Professional Apprenticeship Career Tracks (PACT) is a program designed to enlist Sailors into a monitored general apprenticeship program, which provides Apprentice level formal training and on-the-job training that leads to a viable career field within two years on board their first Permanent Duty Station. More

    Firefighters Fund Helps Servicemembers
    The Terry Farrell Firefighters Fund was founded in memory of its namesake, a decorated member of Rescue 4 of the New York Fire Department and chief of the Dix Hills Volunteer Fire Department, who killed in the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. The fund offers education and financial assistance. More

    Commissaries Promote Family Day
    Commissary officials are urging military families to enjoy a meal together often, but especially on Family Day, Monday, Sept. 24, 2007. During the month of September at commissaries around the world, customers can enter to win a commissary gift certificate. More
