More New Compensation Package Boosts Benefits Military people would get a 3.5 percent pay raise January 2008, under a compensation package voted recently by the House armed services' subcommittee on military personnel. In shaping the personnel section of the fiscal 2008 defense authorization bill, the subcommittee approved other initiatives too. More Should You Use Your GI Bill on Active Duty? More Air Force Emphasizes Anthrax Vaccination Headquarters Air Force officials recently sent additional implementation guidance to major commands that states that all categories of personnel on orders may begin immunizations up to 60 days before deployment or arrival at the deployment location. More Extended Care Health Option (ECHO) The Extended Care Health Option (ECHO) is a supplemental program to the TRICARE Basic benefit that provides eligible active duty family members with an additional financial resource for services and supplies designed to help reduce the disabling effects of a beneficiary's qualifying condition. More Air Force Seeks Attaches Officers and enlisted Airmen are needed to play key roles in international military and political affairs as defense attaches in American embassies worldwide. Once selected, the training process is extensive, sometimes lasting as long as two years, especially if a required language is difficult to learn. More Tops in Blue Tops in Blue is an all active-duty Air Force special unit made up of performers selected for their entertainment abilities. Each year, base talent contests are held and the most talented move on to higher levels of competition. "Tops in Blue" travels throughout the world to entertain Airmen and their families. More Airmen Can Apply for New Nurse Commissioning The Air Force is now accepting applications from qualified enlisted members for a new enlisted commissioning program. The Nurse Enlisted Commissioning Program (NECP) will give enlisted members the opportunity to complete a full-time Bachelor of Science degree in nursing at an accredited university. More Army, Europe Conducts Survey United States Army Europe is conducting a survey to determine whether Soldiers are satisfied with the programs, facilities, services and other aspects of living in Europe. The survey is being conducted until June 15, 2007. The survey and accompanying answer sheets are located throughout the community. More Soldier Show Kicks Off Tour The 2007 U.S. Army Soldier Show recently kicked off a six-month tour. In this year's show, live musicians replace much of the pre-recorded sounds of past performances to make the song-and-dance extravaganza feel more like a concert. Admission to all performances is free. More Arkansas Aids Military Spouses Arkansas recently became the fifteenth state to provide eligibility for unemployment compensation for a military spouse who must terminate employment due to a military-required location of his or her family. The new law will take effect on Oct.1, 2007. More Deployed Parents to View Graduations via Webcasts Deployed parents in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Africa and other locations worldwide will be able to view their high school seniors' graduations via live webcasts on graduation day. Deployed or deploying parents of graduating seniors will be notified when the graduation webcast Internet sites are online. More Marine Sport Hall of Fame Ceremony Announced The Commandant of the Marine Corps will host the 2007 United States Marine Corps Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony here at the Clubs at Quantico, Aug. 17, 2007, at 11 a.m. Gen. James T. Conway will induct former Marines Angelo Bertelli, Leo Nomellini, Gil Hodges, and Robert Wanzer. More Guardsman Completes First Online Retirement A Kansas Air National Guardsman was the first Guard Airman to complete the new online Air Force retirement process, which became mandatory April 15. The Air Reserve Personnel Center website is located at http://arpc.afrc.af.mil. The Guard Airman should follow the prompts for the retirement application. More EchoTaps Musicians to Honor Veterans Hundreds of musicians from across the world will pay tribute to our nation's fallen heroes on Armed Forces Day, May 19, in an event called "EchoTaps." Volunteers playing horns of all types will render a cascade of "Taps" at 11 a.m. local time at each site on May 19. More Mental Health Survey Results Released The Department of Defense has released key findings from the latest Mental Health Advisory Team (MHAT-IV) survey, which assessed more than 1,300 Soldiers and nearly 450 Marines. A new Army Behavioral Health website informational and instructional materials related to Soldiers' mental health. More Three Names Added to Vietnam Veterans Memorial Three more names have been added to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. They are Army Sgt. Richard M. Pruett or Sherman, Texas, Navy Fireman Apprentice Joseph Gerald Krywicki of Holton, Mich., and Army Spc. Wesley Alvin Stiverson of Monticello, Ill. More Indiana Provides Additional Benefits to Military Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels recently signed into law Senate Enrolled Act 480, which increases benefits for Indiana's veterans and military families. The new law exempts all military pay earned while serving in combat theater from Indiana state income tax and more. More ThanksUSA Announces Scholarship Program The nonprofit ThanksUSA invites all children and spouses of military personnel to apply for one of 1,000 scholarships of $1,000 each for college, vocational and technical schools. More Interruptions in Pay a Possibility for AF Airmen have wanted to know if they will not get paid due to the rising costs of the war since the Pentagon requested to divert $1.6 billion from the Navy and Air Force personnel accounts to the Army. The Air Force has sent conflicting answers in the past three weeks. More Service Date Changes Added for Guardsmen Air National Guard Airmen can now request changes and corrections to their military service dates online through the virtual Personnel Center - Guard and Reserve website. This online capability is not yet available to the Air Force Reserve. More New Regulations Worrying Army Bloggers Stars and Stripes reports that bloggers are worrying that new Army rules for all online postings could put severe restrictions on Soldiers' websites. The new regulations specifically ban posting pictures of roadside bomb attacks, images of troops killed in action, and any shots of base security measures. More A Million Thanks Shauna Fleming, founder of A Million Thanks, has teamed up with Buick, Pontiac and GMC divisions of General Motors to collect thank you letters from the public for the troops. People can drop off their letters in Shauna's red, white and blue boxes at GM car dealers across the nation. More Navy Updates Ban on Fraternization Stars and Stripes reports that the U.S. Navy's ban on officers and enlisted dating each other now extends to foreign militaries. The change does not prohibit all relationships between sailors and members of foreign militaries but does include all those already prohibited under the Navy's fraternization policy. More May Dedicated to Appreciating Servicemembers In an effort to draw attention to the personal sacrifices of the men and women of the armed forces and their families, Congress has designated May as National Military Appreciation Month. The National Military Appreciation Month website encourages citizens to draw attention and express appreciation to military families. More Fidelity Fined For Misleading Troops The National Association of Security Dealers (NASD) has fined two Fidelity broker-dealers $400,000 for distributing sales literature using performance charts and data that misled military personnel on the plans' performance. This was aggravated by the fact that the plans were sold primarily to servicemembers.
