DoD Unveils Deployment Compensation Program Under the new policy, active-duty servicemembers who are deployed for more than 12 months in a 36-month period will earn one day of administrative absence for each month beyond 12. If servicemembers are deployed for more than 18 months in a 36-month period, they will earn two days of administrative absence. More Air Force Might Cut Pay for Surge The Air Force's top officer said that if nearly $1 billion in personnel funds taken from the service to pay for combat in Iraq and Afghanistan isn't restored by the end of the summer, Airmen and civilian employees might not get their pay. More Anthrax Vaccinations on Schedule Pacific Air Forces' implementation of the Anthrax Vaccine Immunization Program is on schedule as more than 94 percent of its Airmen who have been designated for mandatory vaccinations have received them. The mandatory anthrax vaccinations are currently limited to certain Airmen. More Army Capitalizes 'Families' in Official Correspondence The Director of the Army Staff has declared that, effective immediately, the word "Families" will be capitalized in all Army correspondence. In the Army in Europe, this rule applies to all documents in all media, not just correspondence. This includes but is not limited to briefing slides and correspondence. More Battlefield Doctors Can View Patient's Medical History The Theater Medical Information Program-Joint (TMIP-J) has released an upgrade to its medical software suite called AHLTA Warrior, which will allow doctors on the battlefield to view a patient's complete electronic health record that is stored stateside in the AHLTA Clinical Data Repository. More Board Watches Out for Soldiers Every Defense Department installation has a system in place to help Soldiers and Family Members who have been treated unfairly by merchants called the Armed Forces Disciplinary Control Board. The board can recommend that the commanding general take a broad spectrum of actions. More Campaign Focuses on Shaken Baby Syndrome The Defense Department has launched a new military family initiative aimed at stopping or reducing the incidence of "Shaken Baby Syndrome." Frustrated parents, especially fathers, can negatively react to their baby's cries by shaking it, an act that can seriously harm or even kill the infant, explained David W. Lloyd. More Changes Made to Overseas List Airmen in the communication-computer systems control career field and 46 other Air Force specialty codes with a date estimated return from overseas of May 1, 2008, or later are eligible to apply for the program. OTEIP incentives include a $2,000 lump sum payment. More DoD to Partner with School Systems The Defense Department said recently that it will work with local schools to try to ensure that military children receive quality education no matter where they attend classes. To this end, the department is creating an Educational Partnerships Directorate within DoDEA. More Freedom Walks to be Held Nationwide Thousands of community leaders, church members and volunteers throughout the nation are again preparing to remember those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001, and to honor military veterans past and present by organizing plans and identifying routes for their 2007 America Supports You Freedom Walks. More Group Fosters Employer Understanding The National Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) has worked to gain and maintain the support of America's employers for the nation's National Guardsmen and reservists since 1972. The organization also offers informal mediation for employers or employees needing assistance. More Health Website Promotes Fitness The Force Health Protection and Readiness (FHP&R) website has recently been redone to provide comprehensive information and make it easier to use. There is a wealth of information to promote and sustain a healthy and fit force, safeguard the health and well-being of Servicemembers and their families. More March2Success Program Helps Students The U.S. Army Recruiting Command is helping prospective recruits and other students improve their test-taking strategies and math, science and English skills through March2Success, a free Web-based program. With a curriculum designed by Kaplan and Educational Options, Inc., the program is proving successful. More New Behavioral Health Website Offers Answers The Army's new Behavioral Health website provides information for Soldiers, their families and of the public on how to help Soldiers deal with the stress of war. Topics include behavioral-health needs before, during and after deployments; pre- and post-deployment health assessments; and more. More Organization Helps Wounded Warriors, Families The Wounded Warriors organization provides resort vacation opportunities to families with dependent children whose servicemember has been injured or killed in combat. Wounded Warriors owns condominiums in Orlando, Fla., and Galveston, Texas, which it provides to qualified families free of charge for up to a week. More Packages From Home Supports Troops What started out as a way for an Arizona Army mom to support her deployed son has turned into a nonprofit organization that sends about 2,500 care packages to servicemembers each month. Packages From Home gives to our (servicemembers) in harm's way. More Policy Change Increase Education Eligibility A recent DoD policy change means National Guard members and reservists are eligible to receive Montgomery G.I. Bill education benefits for the period covering the amount of time they served on active duty, plus four months. The total amount of G.I. Bill coverage for reservists is still 36 months. More Push-Pull Exercise Slated for June More than 300 Individual Ready Reserve Airmen will participate in a Defense Department-required exercise in June. The Air Force will begin "Push-Pull 2007" on June 18. Each Airman identified to participate in this exercise is protected by law from any repercussions by their civilian employers. More Security Alert in Germany The U.S. Embassy in Berlin has released a message saying that U.S. diplomatic and consular facilities in Germany are increasing their security posture. These steps are being taken in response to a heightened threat situation. The U.S. Embassy encourages Americans in Germany to increase their vigilance. More Sock Monkeys Carry Encouragement to Troops Sock Monkey Ministries reaches out to children, adults, and our Troops, who are in need of encouragement through a tangible gift of a handmade sock monkey that will bring comfort in a difficult time in their lives. Nearly 4,800 sock monkeys have been created since 2005. More Tops In Blue Seeks Videographer, Audio Engineer The 2007 Tops In Blue troupe is almost ready to begin the new show season, and they need a videographer and an audio engineer. More Wounded Soldier Hotline Addresses Concerns In 34 days since the launch of the Wounded Soldier and Family Hotline last month, 1,357 callers have dialed in to the U.S. Army Human Resources Command's call center in Alexandria, Va., where 120 operators man the phones in shifts to support a 24-7 operation. More Airman Victim of One-Cent Deposit Scam An Airman assigned to the 50th Mission Support Squadron recently fell victim to a new banking. The scammers apparently generate random routing and account numbers into which they try to deposit one cent. Once the one-cent deposit clears, the perpetrators know the account is active and begin to withdraw funds. More Vet Care Problems Widespread Gen. Richard Cody, the Army's vice chief of staff, said officials were finalizing a report on problems after a team of Army inspectors visited 11 bases in seven states last month to study outpatient treatment, building conditions and the information provided to patients. More MCAS Beaufort Needs Your Help In the wake of the crash of a Blue Angels F/A-18 during an airshow demonstration at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort on Sat., April 21, investigators ask all individuals who think they might have relevant photographs or video of the incident to contact them. More Air Force Assistance Fund Seeks Donations The Air Force Assistance Fund is an annual fund-raiser designed to raise money for charities that support military members and their families. Airmen have four charities to choose from to make a donation; the Air Force Aid Society, the Air Force Village Foundation, the Air Force Enlisted Village Foundation, and the Curtis E.
