More Army Authorizes Combat Patches at Lower Echelons The Army has changed its policy on the wear of combat patches as a result of the way Soldiers and their units now deploy. The new guidance states that when echelons below company level deploy, Soldiers in those units may now wear the combat patch of the lowest-echelon command they deploy with. More DoD Clarifies Reserve-Component Mobilization Policy National Guard and Army Reserve Soldiers will mobilize and deploy for only one year, despite a new policy that active Soldiers will deploy for 15-month tours, a top defense official stressed Friday. Mr. Thomas F. Hall reaffirmed that reserve-component Soldiers are not affected by the 15-month tour policy. More Europe Develops Online Calendar The Installation Management Command-Europe has created a new online Capacity Forecast Calendar to help Soldiers, civilian employees and families leaving the region this summer. The calendar identifies available dates for household goods pick-up/pack-out. More Group Takes Entertainment to Troops Armed Forces Entertainment makes it a mission to bring a piece of home to servicemembers stationed far away. With the priority of reaching remote and isolated locations, the DoD agency hosts more than 1,200 shows each year and reaches more than 500,000 servicemembers. More Hackers Gain Access to MyPay Accounts There has been a recent rise in hackers attacking MyPay accounts, and most victims did not even know it. Most of the stolen information is collected by software that tracks what you do on the computer, say Air Force network administrators. More Mandatory Separation Ages Change Air Force Reserve officers, if otherwise eligible, can now stay in the service longer before reaching their mandatory separation age. In the past, brigadier generals and below had to retire or separate when they reached age 60. Now they can stay until age 62. The age for major generals rose from 62 to 64. More Military Shoppers Can Win Enchanting Trip To introduce their newest fragrance, "Enchanting," by Celine Dion, the perfume manufacturer Coty and the Army & Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) are offering military families the chance to win a trip for two to see Dion live in concert in Las Vegas, valued at $3,000. More Navy Can View Overseas Assignments Online Commands expecting incoming Sailors for overseas/remote duty assignments can now see suitability results in real time on BUPERS OnLine (BOL). Command career counselors (CCC) can access the application on BOL and fill in the pull-down menu items as appropriate. More Navy Perform to Serve Website Requires New Login Sailors using the Perform to Serve (PTS) website are now required to log in using a Command Access Card (CAC) containing their Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) certificates. The new security requirement restricts users from accessing the website from home unless they have a CAC reader. More New Exhibit Opens at Navy Memorial A new exhibit dedicated to the Navy SEALs (Sea, Air, Land) was officially opened to the public April 14 at the U.S. Navy Memorial in Washington. The exhibit entitled "Sea, Air Land: The Navy's Special Operations Sailors," will run through April 2008. More New License Plate in Colorado Supports Troops The American Military Family organization has announced its successful efforts in getting a special license plate dedicated to the troops for residents of Colorado. Ninety-three percent of the proceeds from the new $25 vehicle tag will go to directly support Colorado military members and their families. More New Online Navy Wellness Letter Debuts Navy Wellness is promoting healthier lifestyles for Sailors and their families in their new online newsletter that hit the fleet this month. The newsletter will be produced quarterly, with the next scheduled issue due out Aug. 1. More New Policy Protects Air Force Networks A new Air Force policy on encrypting and digitally signing e-mails is now in effect to ensure security and reliability of information in cyberspace. Officially called the Air Force Public Key Infrastructure Policy on Encrypting and Digitally Signing E-mails, it is designed to combat adversaries' growing attempts at network infiltration. More Online Practice Tests Help Sailors Sailors can improve their Armed Forces Vocational Aptitude Battery and College Level Examination Program test scores by accessing free practice tests now available through Navy Knowledge Online. Unlimited ASVAB practice tests from Peterson's education products may be taken online. More School Closings in Europe Will Not Affect Registration Stars and Stripes reports that the closing of nine DODDS schools across Europe this summer will not affect next year's pupil registration. The registration process is the same whether parents are in districts that are contracting, expanding or disappearing. More Sew Much Comfort Sew Much Comfort is a nonprofit organization whose members have sewn more than 20,000 items of customized clothing for wounded servicemembers since it began in December 2004. The official mission of Sew Much Comfort is to design, create and deliver customized clothing. More Study Examines Military Divorce Rates A yearlong study by the Rand Corp. recently found that divorce in America's military is no higher now than it was during peacetime a decade ago. The student found that divorces from 2.5 percent of military marriages in 2001 to 3 percent in 2005. More Summer Adventures Await Children in Europe Children of deployed Soldiers in Europe have until May 4 to apply for summer camps sponsored by Camp A.R.M.Y. Challenge, which will help a select group of youth participate in four events that are designed specifically for teens and middle-school children. More United Through Reading United Through Reading is a free program available to servicemembers at selected locations. The program is sponsored by the Family Literacy Foundation and is designed to help keep servicemembers connected with their children by reading books recorded on DVDs or videotapes, which are then sent home. More Web-Based Service Assists Air Guard Air Guard members tired now have an alternative to waiting for customer service at their military personnel flights (MPF) or waiting in line during their unit's training weekends. They can visit the virtual Personnel Center (Vpc-GR) website, which offers 16 different MPF transactions. More Policy Shift Cut Disability Retirements From 2000 through 2006, the Army gave ratings of 30 percent or higher to only 13 percent of soldiers deemed disabled. By comparison, the Navy awarded disability retirement to 36 percent of its disabled members. The Air Force number was 27 and the Marines Corps 18 percent. More Free Military Family Resort Vacation Destination R&R, a retreat for wounded service members and their families, is now accepting applications for a free family getaway. Destination R&R was created to honor the sacrifice of wounded servicemembers and their families and to provide them with the opportunity to rejuvenate and have fun. More Troops to Teachers Scholarship Alert Western Governors University is extending its offering of supplemental $1,500 scholarships to students participating in the Troops to Teachers program through June 2008. The WGU scholarships are in addition to the regular Troops to Teachers program stipends.
