Your first promotion is to Airman (E2). An Airman, while still primarily
an apprentice, is expected to understand and conform to military standards.
The Promotion Process
Promotion to Airman (E2) occurs at 6 months of service.
Your unit commander has promotion authority for promotions to Airman
(E-2), Airman First Class (E-3) and Senior Airman (E-4). Promotions
to E-2 are automatic as long as you maintain the Air Force's standards
for performance and behavior. The only requirement for advancement
is 6 months time in grade (TIG) and time in service (TIS).

Exceptions to the Rule
There are two exceptions to the normal Airman promotion process in
the Air Force:
- The first program is for selected enlisted personnel to enlist at
an advanced rank, due to prior military or leadership experiences
such as college credits, participation in Junior ROTC, etc.
- The highest advanced rank one can enlist with under this program is
Airman First Class (E-3).
The Air Force also offers accelerated promotion for those who
agree to enlist for six years Active Duty. Under this program,
enlistees start basic training as an Airman Basic (E-1), are promoted
to Airman (E-2) upon graduation from basic, and are then advanced
to Airman First Class (E-3) 20 weeks after graduation from basic training,
or when they graduate technical (MOS) school , whichever occurs first.
