The Service Wide Exam Competition
The Coast Guard advances enlisted personnel to the rates of E-5 through E-9 based on a Service Wide Competition. Candidates are rank ordered based on their final multiple score (FMS). The largest number of promotion points can be achieved by doing well on the Service Wide Exam (SWE).

Coast Guard Subject Matter Experts located at Coast Guard Training Centers create Service Wide Exams (SWE’s) to test enlisted members knowledge of their rating and general military requirements (MRN).

There are several steps you can take to improve your SWE score:
- Form or Join Study Groups.
- Review past Correspondence Course Quizzes.
- Request assignments that will increase your rate knowledge.
