Re: Robert reed Huff

Thanks for the reply to this search. I am trying to help a cousin in Texas find Robert R Huff for an old couple she knows from her church. Just to confirm that we are talking about the same Robert Reed Huff. Was your Grand Father born October 25, 1916, in Aransas Pass, Texas, to John Oscar Huff and Nancy Ellen Roberts. He graduated high school from Mineola, Texas in about 1935. Robert joined the U S Marines on May 23, 1940. Robert was assigned to the Oklahoma at Pearl Harbor and was on board when Pearl was attacked. He was injured during the battle. He wad awarded the Purple Heart. Afterwards, he was assigned to the USS Hornet. Sgt. Robert R Huff, USMC, was aboard the USS Hornet at Guadalcanal, during the Battle of Santa Cruz. Again wounded in battle but not until half of the crews was killed, He took over the guns and kept fighting. After the carrier sank, October 26, 1942 Robert had to try and swim three miles to the nearest shore. This was almost impossible due to severe damage to his left arm from a thousand pound bomb dropped near the anti-aircraft gun he was manning. He was picked up by a destroyer. Sgt Huff was awarded the Silver Star and the Purple heart. Sgt. Huff later went to Norfolk, Va. Nothing else is in the family records until his death, January 27, 1997, San Diego, California. Burial in Escondido, California. Patrick David MGySgt (Retired)
