This is the story that my Dad wrote about his experiences during WWII.
Prologue
As a graduate doctor in 1945, I faced the prospect of military combat. Like most young people, I had a healthy sense of personal immortality. No one could ever go to war without this delusion, but I believe I took something extra with me. I must have had a little help from Heaven, perched on my shoulder and guiding me to safety. That's the only way I can explain what happened to me.
Chapter One - The First Angel
I went directly from my medical internship into the Navy. My first assignment was the Merchant Marine Academy in Great Neck, NY, where I stayed 19 months. My second assignment was to the Amphibious 10th Beach Battalion. I was there two weeks before I learned that we were all "volunteers". We were trained and conditioned for the Normandy landings but held in reserve.
