My father, Virgil Pearl Crane, was born on May 25th, 1926 in Hydro, Oklahoma to Curtis and Velma Crane. He always said he sympathized with Johnny Cash?s hero in the song, A Boy Named Sue, because of his middle name Pearl. He had been told his parents were expecting a girl. His parents believed in strict obedience to the rules which were: no lying; no stealing; no cussing; you could fight among yourselves, but be fair; stick up for each other against others. The family later moved to Nebraska and Kansas before winding up in Stamford, Texas. When Virgil was six, he began attending school in a two-room schoolhouse. His father Curtis was one of two teachers and also the principal of the school, which included a farmhouse for the family to live in as part of his wages. Every morning Virgil?s father would saddle up the one horse they owned and off they?d ride to the schoolhouse.
