On June 10, 1969 my Uncle Jerry was engaged in cover fire for his unit so that they could fall back to safety. When my Uncle went to return to his unit, he was mistaken for the enemy and was killed with one single shot to the head. He was 19 years old. He was the bravest man I ever knew. He gave his life to protect his unit. PFC Gerald W. Shakley attended East Brady High School, now part of Karns City High School (Pennsylvania), where he is honored in the hallways and remembered by the students and faculty.
