I enlisted into the Army in mid June of 1983. I was on my way to Basic Training at Fort Dix, NJ on July 7, 1983. After completing basic training, I stayed at Fort Dix for my AIT. I became a Motor Transport Operator, current designation 88M. My first duty assignment was West Germany. I was assigned to D Co, 249th Engineer Combat Battalion (Heavy) in Karlsruhe, Germany. I was there until mid June of 1985 when I was transferred to Fort Stewart, Georgia. I was initially in a supply and transportation battalion before a reorganization that created foward support battalions consisting of a HQ company, medical company, supply companies. I was one of the first in the original and new A Co. 2 FSB, 24th Infantry Division at Fort Stewart, Georgia. In May 1985, I was given an honorable discharge and immediately enlisted into the Army National Guard before I even left Fort Stewart.
