Many of us have grown up with a father in military aviation. A lot of us have joined the same service and a number of us were actually stationed on the same base with him. However I don't think there are too many people that can say they were stationed on two different bases and flew as a crewmember on three different aircraft with their father. I'm sure somewhere in Washington DC the aviation assignment guys were getting a big kick out of this.
I can truthfully say that he was a darn good pilot. I think he preferred fixed wing aircraft more than helicopters since he enjoyed his ever present cup of coffee and cigarette while cruising along high above the landscape. His favorite statement about real flying was: When I look to my right all I want to see is copilots and when I look to my left all I want to see are engines and when the flight engineer says FIRE in number 4 I have to ask which wing? Either way he would rather be in the air than behind the desk.
