SSgt James F. Witherington served in the Army Air Corps from 1944 to the end of the war. He was an engineer and top turret gunner on the B-17G, "Going My Way", flying 21 combat missions over occupied France, Belgium,Czec., Nazi Germany, Holland and Denmark during WWII. He was stationed at Bury St. Edmonds, Rougham, England, home of the 94th Heavy Bombardment Group, 333rd Bomb Squadron.
The other members of the crew include: 2ndLt. Walter J. Rolefson, Pilot; 2ndLt. Arnold J. Smith, Co-Pilot; Flight Officer Edmond Bortoti, Navigator; Flight Officer Angelo G. Gagliardi, Bombardier; Cpl Robert L. McNally, Armorer & Waist Gunner; Cpl. Edward E. Robb, Ball Turret Gunner; Cpl. Ernst Borrello, Waist Gunner; Cpl. Earl W. Dunkle, Tail Gunner; Cpl. Jock Bryce, Radio Operator.
Three of the 21 missions were scrubbed because of malfunctions of the aircraft or bombload.
