| Tribute: |
Uncle Mike was sent to France as a rifleman, Easy Company, 318th Infantry Regiment, 80th Infantry Division, in Patton's 3rd Army in early August 1944, and was continually involved in combat operations until his medical evacuation during the Rhineland Campaign. Born the son of a Pennsylvania coalminer, drafted into the Army in May of '42, he was not unlike the thousands of men who answered the call of duty in that era. Decorations and promotions he did not earn; rather his was a service of sacrifice and suffering, the brutal and dehumanizing ordeal of the combat infantryman. His greatest gift was that part of his spirit that was sacrificed on the bloody soil of Northern Europe. (Submitted by Michael Kandrac, Jr.)
