Frank Luke, Jr., was born on May 19, 1897, in Phoenix, AZ. During WWI, he shot down 18 enemy aircraft over France in only 17 days. Frank Luke was shot down near Murvaux, France, and was killed in action on September 29, 1918. Luke AFB, Arizona is named in his honor.
