  • FFG-8 Reunion 12-13 Sept 2014 Bath Maine: See the two email messages below. Joseph Marshall posted in USS MCINERNEY (FFG 8) Joseph Marshall 8:07am Oct 16 Sorry this is so long - please read - please respond via email to joseph.e.marshall@navy.mil All, This is the current status of our planned FFG-8 reunion in Bath Maine. As you will see below, Captain Schaeffer and our New England-based shipmates are looking to get a tentative idea of numbers. In order to move forward and make hard reservations for various gatherings, there will need to be some money changing hands and the amount will obviously depend upon the projected number of attendees. So check your calendars/schedules and decide if you are able to project your commitment. As an example, MY plan is to be there....obviously, plans can change and no one can predict the future, but I want to be counted and will pay along (as required by our planners) to be sure I'm covered. I will be acting as the communication point of contact, so there's no need to "reply all" when you respond. I'll track the numbers and get the word up to Mr. Schaeffer. I'll also track and condense your ideas/preferences as you consider the questions below. Don't forget to include spouses, relatives, buddies, etc. in your responses so we can be as accurate as possible as we project numbers. As before, do your part to get the word out to shipmates that do not appear in this "to" list. I'll try to post this on the Facebook FFG-8 group page. Marty and/or Jason, please solicit on any of the other social media/veterans sites. Let's start cranking it up...all hands on deck. This is LESS THAN a year away. Very Respectfully, Joseph Marshall 215 897 1555 -----Original Message----- From: George Schaeffer [mailto:george@schaeffer.ws] Sent: Wednesday, October 16, 2013 8:25 AM To: Marshall, Joseph E CIV NSWCCD Philadelphia, 9420 Cc: Jere Waterman; Steven Letourneau; wclaypool@myfairpoint.net; 'Kent Eliassen' Subject: FFG 8 Thirty Fifth Reunion 2014 in Bath, Maine Joe, Please disburse this information through your database of former crew members. We held a planning meeting Tuesday night, 15 October 2013. Attendees: Jere Waterman, Keith Eliassen, Walt Claypool and George Schaeffer. Proposed Schedule: Friday 12 Sep and Saturday 13 Sep 2014. We went with the assumption that most shipmates will arrive at various times on Friday and depart sometime Sunday. Thinking that many have never been to the Bath area or have not been there for a long time, that free time for exploring or rekindling memories would be appreciated. Therefore we didn't want to over schedule. Friday, 12 Sep 2014, arrival day. We are exploring various venues in Bath. Since arrival times will be staggered, we thought it best that we come up with a venue that would allow us to order food and drinks individually, as well as tell the attending sea stories. Saturday, 13 Sep 2014, afternoon. Arrange a BIW tour. Because of yard work schedules, tours are not available before noon. Saturday, 13 Sep 2014, evening. A buffet at the Taste of Maine. They offer a room which expands out onto a veranda. I have the room tentatively held. This will require a $1000 down payment to hold the room and the price. A minimum of 50 people is required. There are 3 different buffets in the $25 to $30 range plus 27% gratuity and tax. The menu can be viewed at http://www.tasteofmaine.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=23&Itemid=21 . Hors D'oeuvres would be additional. Etched glassware, T shirts, etc. could be obtained if that was desired. In order to go forward, we need: - some feedback on the current thoughts and timeframe - rough numbers on attendees - decision on which of the buffets would be preferred - Money to offset some of the costs, since we have no budget (to be decided soon). Thanks, George

  • 2012 Clifton Sprague Reunion: Hotel is down to two choices 1. Holiday Inn Express on Mayport road. or Navy lodge on the Mayport base. My initial feeling is that though the Navy Lodge is less expensive, the Holiday Inn may be the better choice due to accessibility issues with the Navy Base (just our luck they have a security thing happen that weekend). The Holiday Inn Express is offering a block of 10 rooms at $95 a night or a block of 20 rooms at $89 per night Judging from the fact we have at least 20 commitments on this page, we should be able to get the 20 room block easy enough. This inclues a small conference room that will enable us to have a place to gather. I will be sending out the hotel info via Email and posting it here as well once the deal is finalized. If anyone has a strong opinion about this feel free to let me know. I would like some input as far as desires with regard to having a dinner banquet. Some ideas I am kicking around is a catered dinner at one of the service associations VFW, American Legion, or Fleet Reserve, or possibly the CPO club on the Mayport Base. We could also try a group thing at a local restaurant. That option would afford a more varied menu, but may be difficult depending on the size of our group. I wont be able to get quotes for these things without having a fairly accurate number of expected attendees. Also, input is appreciated for a planned outing for the group. Dinner will be Saturday evening, so Saturday morning/afternoon is a good time for something. I?m thinking a ship tour at Mayport. Tell me what you think. Requests for ship tours have to be submitted in writing to the base PAO three months in advance so I will do that by next Friday, May 25th. That way the request will be in??and can be cancelled if there is no interest. I expect folks will arrive Thursday or Friday as their schedules permit. Friday evening will be an informal bull session in the conference room?.sea stories, getting reacquainted, having a beer or 6?..you know, sailor stuff. Dinner plans will be made as the mood strikes. Anyone arriving early (Thursday) can get together with me and we will figure out something to do. Sunday will not have anything planned as of now, but if enough people are sticking around maybe something can be planned. I plan on sending Email and posting Facebook each week so everyone is kept updated. If you know of anyone who is not on Facebook, or is not on this Email list?.let me know how to reach them. Finally, we still need to entice any former Commanding Officers to attend this event. Having one or more former skippers adds a bit of class to the proceedings and it?s fun to hear them talk about the ship from the command perspective in a social setting. OK, that?s all for now. More to follow weekly, I will try to do it each Friday. Respectfully, Rich Foxwell GSMC, USN ret

  • U.S.S. Julius A. Furer DEG/FFG-6: To all JAF shipmates of all years: An ad hoc reunion committee consisting of Captain Stark, Gerry (Chopper) Chopp, Chris Martel and myself have been looking into a planned 2nd reunion in 2009 for the crews of the U.S.S. Julius A. Furer (DEG/FFG-6). Fully realizing that we could not possibly match the splendid planning and execution of the first reunion, we started discussing what we could do that did not require the logistics of the original reunion. An idea was presented and ? finally ? after much discussion, was agreed to by the committee. A reunion at sea! Why a cruise? Mostly because once you've paid the cruise fare, it's almost all inclusive. Your hotel is paid, your food is paid, your entertainment is paid. Drinks and shore excursions are extra. We know that the economy is tough right now which is another reason for choosing the cruise for a reunion site. When you see the price below, you'll have to agree that the price is reasonable. And of course, spending time with shipmates is priceless! For those of you who have cruised before, you'll know of what I speak when I say that being at sea with smiling faces waiting on you hand and foot, comfortable beds, good chow AND NO WATCHES TO STAND is the only way to go. What we have chosen is a 5-day cruise out of Miami onboard the Carnival ship Destiny. The cruise departs Monday, Nov. 2, 2009 and returns to Miami on Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009. There will be port calls in Grand Cayman, and Ocho Rios. To check out the cruise and the many things that are offered, go to http://www.carnival.com/Itinerary.aspx?embkCode=MIA&itinCode=WC1&durDays=5&shipCode=DE&subRegionCode=CW&rateCode=B&sailDate=11/2/2009. There you can check out the staterooms, shore excursions and onboard activities. You will find options as to your cabins. The inside cabins (just a room, no windows) are the cheapest, with the prices going up from there. You are free to choose the accommodations which best meet your needs and budget. There will be a formal night on the second night out. It's suits, tuxedos or military uniforms for men, coordinated pantsuits, cocktail dresses, evening gowns or military uniforms for women. Don't let that put you off, if you don't care to dress up for dinner, there are other restaurants on the ship for more casual dining or, you can get room service 24-7. Also, PASSPORTS ARE REQUIRED. You'll notice that I've sent this email to as many shipmates as I have email addresses for. PLEASE, LOOK AT THE ADDRESS LIST. If you know of anyone who did not get a copy. Forward it along. If you have any doubts as to whether or not a shipmate ? from any year ? got this, PLEASE FORWARD! Also, if you know of anyone without email (STCS Linville comes to mind), print this and send it out via regular mail to them. Oh, yes, if you got this twice, forgive me. I'm a belt and suspenders kind of guy, I like to make sure that everyone gets this. Chris Martel will also be sending this out ensuring the widest possible net is being thrown. We will be working through and with Robbie Robinson, a retired USN/USCG chief who specializes in reunion cruises. He has answers to all of your questions. I'm sure he can arrange air/cruise packages as well as round-trip transfers to/from the airport. At the end of this email is some information he has already provided and other details. He has cautioned us as to the high prices of hotels in the Miami area, so if at all possible, you may wish to fly in on the day of departure and out the day of return. He has told me that he can arrange a space for us to meet as a group at least once and that our dining tables would be assigned in close proximity to one another so we can share meals as a group. The four committee members have made the commitment and set aside the time to attend. I have, in fact, already sent in my down payment. We hope that as many as possible will join us. Captain Stark has expressed the hope to see a minimum of 42 couples to match the 42nd anniversary of the ship's commissioning. Personally, I hope for more. We'd like to see all who attended the first reunion, plus of course, those who couldn't make it that time. You have almost a year to plan and save. Please give all serious thought to attending. USS JULIUS A. FURER (DEG/FFG-6) REUNION November 2nd, 2009 - Carnival Destiny - Miami, FL ???? We would like to extend an invitation to all former USS Julius A. You will then receive an e-mail confirmation, or U.S. Mail confirmation if you don't have a computer. Your actual cabin number will be assigned upon making your SECOND DEPOSIT of $150.00 PER PERSON by July 1st, 2009, or earlier if you choose. YOU WILL THEN HAVE UNTIL September 1st, 2009 TO MAKE YOUR FINAL PAYMENT. Your first deposit must be made on a debit or credit card for ease in securing your cabin. Cards, checks or money orders are all acceptable for any or all of the remaining payments once the first deposit is made. Also, you will be sent invoices and reminders periodically so that you don't have to remember payment dates. ???? In the event that you must cancel, all money paid including the insurance if you choose to take it, will be refunded 100 percent, directly back to the credit card that was used for payment, WITH ABSOLUTELY NO PENALTY, as long as you do so before midnight on September 1st, 2009 which is also the final payment date. • USS Rathburne: The hotel is centrally located and easy access to more than 25 shows, attractions, and shopping outlets. There is a Country Kitchen Restaurant and Pub located on the premises. I am in the process of negotiating a hospitality room but we may have to share the cost. Also, I am coordinating with the hotel for various shows and other entertainment. Example of some of the shows are Bobby Vinton, Dixie Stampede, Larry Gatlin, The Platters, and Lost in the Fifties. I suggest you circular file complaints if not satisfied with my selections.
