Amphibious Warfare Vessels - Various

USS Durham - LKA 114

Past Events & Reunions:
  • USS DURHAM LKA 114: USS Durham LKA 114 Ships Company from pre commissioning through the February 25, 1994 decommission, The June 9-12 date I only used because I had to use one. I need a little information from you in order to interface with a venue for our 2011 reunion site in the San Diego area. First & foremost, We have talked about favorable months and they are all favorable in one respect or another. San Diego has great weather year round. There has been discussion about a March April time frame for the Snow Birds to experience an early winter break but then again many of the ships company from the later years my have children still in school. if we held it sometime between mid June through July (staying away from the 4th of July weekend) in a 4 day weekend time frame, how many of you would like to get together -- and -- really try to make the happening? I'm looking for a realistic ballpark number, no commitments at this time, but this reunion would be for you -- of major interest and one of your top destination priorities in 2011. Count yourself as one and add one for spouse or significant other. More information following, Fair Winds & Following Seas, Durham Plankowner, Greg

  • USS DURHAM LKA 114: 2010 - This is real early at this time but we will be having our 2nd reunion in St Louis, MO some time in early June. The dates nor hotel have not been secured. The 2011 Reunion will be in San Diego. We will have a dedicated ships web site go live by this fall at the latest. We will need help in locating the ships company in the 70's 80's & 90's. I'm asking for any one who served in the 80' and 90's that would volunteer some time and head up the searches for those years to contact me.

  • USS DURHAM LKA 114: On March 26, I talked with Plankowner Captain John Stensrude, the first CO, and he said he would be there for the reunion. To Register and get additional USS Durham LKA 114 Reunion information please go to the Military Locator & Reunion Service Inc. web site link. www.mlrsinc.com When the site opens, look to the left side and key on "Reunions" and scroll down to the "USS Durham" You can print out a pdf registration packet and send it overland mail or call them after you read through the information. Additionally when you can, please fill out on line any additional information they are asking for. Note that there are different packages all depending on your arrival date. Also if you don't intend to stay at the hotel, there is a list of dinners, activities, and name tags (covered in the 3 plans when staying at the hotel) that you should read through and select the ones that will fulfill your needs. Thanks again and I am looking forward to seeing you all there. USS Durham LKA-114 Plankowner BM2 Greg Yung

  • USS DURHAM Feb Update: Hi to All! I'm back from my trip to Durham NC and a visit with my parents in Aiken, SC. The weather was cold and believe it or not we had 5 inches of snow in Durham the morning we had set for the meeting. Snow paralyzes is what happens in part of the country -- for me in Minnesota, it's just a nuisance -- so any way we had to move the day out and I was finally able to met with Brenda & Larry Eckard with Military Locator & Reunion Service Inc, Chelsey Jean Didsbury, Convention Resources Manager for the City of Durham, & Tom Keville, Director of Sales for the Wyndham Raleigh Durham Hotel. It was a good meeting and I learned that the Mayor of Durham is dedicating the days of our reunion as "USS Durham LKA 114 Days" per Chelsey , Convention Resources Manager for the City of Durham. If you have already made a reservation at the hotel it will have to be transferred to the reunion program. The cost is being put together as I put this e-mail together. It will be a single charge per person that will cover rooms identified meals and more. You will be able to identify what you want in your package in that, some items are ala la carte like breakfast as I understand it. The attachment is Brenda's proposed itinerary MS Word Document that I would like you to download and review prior to the conference call. This is a broad brush and can be refined. We will need to get the overland and e-mail contact information updated because she will be doing a mailing and putting out the information in over 500 publications. I am in process of building a dedicated LKA 114 Web site that will be able to link to her site and I hope vice-versa. The hotel is relatively close to the airport and provides free transportation to and from the Raleigh Durham airport. I hope some will rent a car or drive in so that we can get out and about with out the cost of renting a bus. The Hotel is very clean and up to date with flat screen TVs & free computer Internet in all rooms plus a business room on the main floor that has copy capabilities and a computer you can use if you don't take yours with you, a workout room, pool, GOOD COFFEE, and more. Tom said he has a great solo guitar player/singer that will be there in the evenings. We will have a private suite on the 7Th floor for late evening get togethers and 2 large rooms on the main floor. One's The "DURHAM" Room -- and so it should be -- and will be OUR HANG OUT place that we can relax have a drink or a beer and snacks, share old stories, get to know each other again, watch DVDs that any and all can bring of pictures from your time on the Durham -- and more. The 2ND room on the main floor will be a room to lay out any memorabilia you may want to bring to share with the rest of us. Open Conference Call: the day after tomorrow, Thursday February 5, 2009. the call in number and access code are below. Just call the phone number and when instructed, enter the access code followed by pushing the # key and you will join the rest. I hope Brenda will be able to join us at this time:9:00 PM EST8:00 PM CST7:00 PM MST6:00 PM PST Free Conference Call Conference Dial-in Number: (712) 775-7000 Participant Access Code: 167792# Plankowner 3rd Div BM2 Greg Yung

  • Durham Reunion Update: Happy Holidays Just an update on the progress. We have identified a hotel. I have not talked live to Brenda yet but will shortly. Brenda is our representative with the group that specializes in helping to make arrangements and make it all happen. As I indicated in one of my last, Brenda was working on the the Hotels for us and got back with John Harris and I today. Last week they made the trip to Durham NC to visit all of the properties/hotels that expressed an interest in the reunion and met the reunion criteria (keep in mind that not all hotels are interested in a group of unknown size). Five hotels did respond and all 5 reviewed, the Marriott, Doubletree, Sheraton Four Points, Hilton Garden Inn, and the Wyndham are the five hotels that were interested, met the criteria, and submitted a bid. All five hotels could have been used, but everything considered, the Wyndham was the choice. When they considered quality, room rates, meal prices, meeting, banquet and hospitality space, complimentary airport shuttle service and free parking, none of the other properties came close (except possibly for the Marriott which did not have the dates we needed). So, based on the findings we will use the Wyndham for the USS Durham reunion May 21-24, 2009.You can visit the Wyndham website to see more of the hotel details. They met with the staff there and were impressed with their sincere desire to be our host. The Sales Director has experience with military reunions in the Boston area and is well acquainted with the unique requirements of a reunion. They strongly feel this is the best choice and look forward to a great reunion there. They also met with Chelsey Didsbury from the Convention & Visitors Bureau to discuss ways the city can become involved with the reunion. She cannot of course commit to actions that the city officials might take, but she can be our ?voice? to them. She is most willing to assist us, and from that perspective, I think we hit ?pay dirt? with her. In the January/February time line John Harris and I will visit the Durham Wyndham. Brenda asked me to convey that they are truly looking forward to this reunion. We hope to have the proposed registration packet for review shortly after the first of the year Happy Holidays & A Safe & Joyful New Year
