2007 DMZ Veterans Reunion :
March 2007
Dear DMZ Vets:
A reunion is being planned for DMZ Vets during the weekend of November 9, 2007 in San Francisco. The outline of the events would be Thursday, November 8, 2007 check-in and hospitality room and easy dining; Friday, November 9 Salmon fishing from 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.; Friday night dinner sponsored by the Oakland American Legion 10th District 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.; Saturday morning 3 tour options including a tour of San Francisco Bay and the USS Potomac which was used by President Roosevelt during WWII or a 1 hour boat cruise in San Francisco Bay and shopping at Pier 39 or a walking tour of the Oakland Waterfront at Jack London Square including a small art fair then Oakland Produce District; Saturday evening would be dinner from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at a nice restaurant; Sunday morning, November 11 would be a visit to the Jack London Square Farmer?s Market (you will recall this is Veteran?s Day); Sunday afternoon DMZ Vets recognition ceremony at the USS Hornet, Sunday evening, November 11 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. there will be a dinner.
The typical November weather is 50 degrees overnight and 60 degrees daytime in Oakland. On the water, temperatures are 10 degrees lower.
This sounds like a wonderful reunion and I wanted to get information out to you as soon as possible so that you would decide whether you want to attend. See how the native Americans lived and worked in the time before the white man came to the Pacific North West. Learn some of the myths of the Local Umatilla, Cayuse and Nez Perz Indians as told by Tribal Elders. This tour takes about 2 hours. Cost $3.00 group of 10 or more.
_____10:00 AM Pendleton Woolen Mills tour. This is a free tour of the Pendleton Woolen Mills where woolen fleece is spun into yarn and woven into Blankets. This tour takes about 45 minutes to an hour.
_____2PM Underground Tours and Cozy Rooms. Tour lasts about 2 hours. Tour limit: 18 persons per tour. Cost$ 10.00
_____2PM Tamastslikt Cultural Institute Tour. This Tour lasts about 2 hours. Cost$ 3.00
9:30 AM Saturday Taura King and Tom Courbat: Symposium on Agent Orange. History of herbicide use in Korea. Tom is a 190% disabled Korea Vet who has ?Been There Done that? with the best of them and Taura is an experienced researcher with tons of documentation in her archives proving herbicide use in Korea . After the symposium Tom and Taura are available for small group discussions and help if you need it.
10:00 AM Saturday Mike Pres from the Walla Walla VA Hospital will talk about ?PTSD? ? So you have PTSD, you?re not nuts you just need help.? Mike runs group counseling sessions at the Walla Walla VA Hospital for vets who have a positive diagnosis of PTSD. If you have the problem or think you might have a problem this seminar is for you.
Sunday Morning there will be a memorial service for those vets who died in the line of duty in Korea or who have died from exposure to toxic chemicals while they were on duty in Korea. Please bring the names of your fallen comrades to be read at the service. This service will last about 30 minutes.
