History of the 170th Military Police Company
History of the 170TH Military Police Company , 504th Military Police Battalion.
On 12 November 1942, a company of the 781st MP Battalion was constituted into the United States Army as Company D and activated 28 November 1942 at Ft. Custer, Michigan. In April 1943, Company D was deployed to Cairo, Egypt, and reorganized as the 170th MP Company on 1 June 1944. On 5 March 1946, the 170th Military Police Company was inactivated at Cairo.
On 11 January 1971, the 170th MP Company was activated into the Regular Army at Preidio of San Francisco, California, under the 504th Military Police Battalion. In June of 1984, the company moved from the Presidio of San Francisco to Ft. Lewis, Washington with the 504th MP Battalion.
The 170th Military Police Company provides a military police force that prepares for war and contingency operations, while performing community assistance and force protection. The company has deployed several times in the past six years in support of SOUTHCOM, supporting operations in Honduras and Panama. During past deployments to Panama, the company conducted force protection and humanitarian relief missions in support of Operations " SUSTAIN LIBERTY" and " SAFE HAVEN". Additionally, elements of the 170th have participated in numerous I Corps training exercises at Ft. Lewis, Republic of Korea, and Thailand. Most recently, the unit deployed in support of Joint Task Force Panama to participate in Operation " SUSTAIN LIBERTY" from October 1996 to March 1997.
The 170th MP Company has a proud history of being called on at a short notice to perform special missions that only a well trained and highly motivated unit can perform. During peacetime and in combat, the 170th lives up to the company motto of... "DRAGON SLAYERS...LEAD THE WAY".
