Both the Officer and EM were in high spirit over their trip and spoke very highly of each other. All EM were in excellent physicl condition after their hazardous voyage. ** 5 December 1943 - Two hundred and three (203) EM on temp duty with POW Detachments. *** The 709th MP BN UNIT CREST*** The significance of the 709th Military Police Battalion unit crest closely parallels the history of the battalion. The Fleur-de-lis and galley, taken from the coat - of - arms of the city of Paris, France, have a two-fold meaning. Together they indicate service in the area around Paris. By itself the Fleur-de-lis represents services in Northern France. The galley symbolizes the early assignment of the battalion escorting prisoners of war from North Africa to the United States. The wavy bars represent two trips in this capacity.(Source of information was researched from the 709th MP BN historical sketches and historical reports from entries from 1943 and 1944 by Richard W. Burch, retired Military Police Senior NCO and former member of the 709th MP BN.) "Securitas Copiarum" (Guardians of the Troops)
