The Insulted Forgotten Veteran
I'm glad to see the term "Forgotten Veteran". That's how I've been refering to those of us who were on the DMZ in '68 and '69. That's what we are to the rest of the world. I went to Korea because I was only 17 years old, and too young to go to Vietnam. But, being so young, I came away with a lot of scars and medical problems too. I have been fighting for two years to get compensation for agent orange exposure. I have type ll diabetes and several secondary illness that go along with it. I spent ten months on the dmz. I enjoyed the fun times in the monsoons, slopping through the rice paddys, freezing my gazzoo off in the driving snow while trying to stay warm in a pup tent not big enough for a rat.My favorite time was sitting in my fox hole on Christmas Eve, listening to "Lonely Boy" over that loud speaker, drinking my warm beer. How can you beat that? But the VA tried to tell me at one point that I wasn't even there. See if that won't mess with your mind. After having nightmares all these years, wondering if it was real, then they tell you that you weren't there after all. That day I was ready for the loony bin. Over a period of two years, they have lost my file three times, told me agent orange was never sprayed in Korea, told me it was sprayed but I wasn't there when it was, told me that I wasn't in any of the units that were there, could't even find me in their records at one time, and at one time a secretary in the office in Pittsburgh told me that there are other veterans a lot worse off than me and maybe I should just live with it and quit complaining. At this point, I can't even watch military on t.v. anymore. It angers me so!! All this government did for me was make me an alcoholic (they say that was my own irresponsibility), ruin my physical health and make me an angry psychotic maniac. I gave up my so called VA rep. and now I'm being helped by the county VA rep. who has been more helpful than anything that other guy did. He basically told me to forget it. He didn't want to be bothered. Thanks for allowing my to vent my frustrations. If there is anyone out there who has any tips for me, please send my an e-mail to glencoeborn@lightsp.com Thanks. Daryl Eperjesi p.s. Today is my birthday. I am officially a senior citizen today. I'm 55 today and still getting screwed by uncle sam. HaHaHa
