Vets Benefits Act & Spina Bifida in Kids
The 2003 Vets Benefits Act MAY make more Korean vets eligible for benefits than before. Existing law states that vets who served in or "near" ( a very loosely defined term) the DMZ in 1968 or 1969 may have been exposed to Agent Orange and MAY be eligible for benefits (up to $2,500/mo. or more TAX FREE and free medical benefits) if they have any of eleven listed diseases.
The new law expands the time frame, but only for KIDS (with Spina Bifida) of veterans who served from Sep. 1967 to August 31, 1971. Wise veterans will get a very good rep (from the VFW, Viet Nam Vets - they WILL represent Korean vets, Am Vets, or DAV) and pursue their OWN claim for exposure during that period and related disease. This only makes sense, since if the kids could get a disease if the vet was exposed during that period, then obviously the VET could get a disease as well.
Take note of this - it may be an important opportunity that you would not otherwise be aware of. And remember, YOU EARNED ANY DISABILITY BENEFITS you may be eligible to - never feel like you are taking them away from someone else!!
