Not For Everyone
More than once did an aviator get assigned to one of these platoons and refuse to serve in it. Seems they didn't like camping out. The Commanders always made a big deal out of it. But every rebeler was transfered to a real Aviation Unit. Not that these Platoons weren't real. We were just to small to be fully equiped. So we weren't authorized to do some repairs. But Base Depot would let us do some of those anyway. Not only did we take care of our Aircraft, We took care of them in the field and we worked our asses off. These Aviation platoons consisted of 10 birds (6 Hueys and 4 OH58's), approx. 20 pilots and around 30 enlisted. There were a bunch of crewchiefs and approx. 10 maintenance personnel. 3 Airframe, 1 Prop & Rotor, 2 Engine, 1 Avionics, 1 Electronics, 1 Supply & Requisition and 1 P.O.L.(petro,oil & Lube). We weren't authorized to do some repairs, but Base Depot would let us do some of those anyway.
