Disestablishment of the Navy Steel Band
Disestablishment of the US Navy Steel Band was the result of detailing by Head of Navy Music. First the appointment of a less than competent Band Master, then the appointment of a totally incompetent Senior Chief as leader of the Steel Band. The result: in the last year of operation the band performed less then 30 times - a number often achieved historically in a one week period. This wasn't because of lack of demand, it was because the Senior Chief turned down every request that he felt wasn't worthy for his group. The group was closed down, billets distributed to other bands, and instruments given away before the congressmen, admerals or the public could contest the decision. Justification: "lack of demand for the band. The real stories, many hard to beleive but true, are told by the bandmembers serving in the steel band's last few years of operation. The band's leadership, as it was detailed by Head of Navy Music was the recipe for the end of the US Navy Steel Band.
