Death of the Navy Steel Band
I wasn't there for the end, but I can offer my opinion...
The Steel Band began its death spiral when it was moved from Puerto Rico to New Orleans. Who wanted to hear a steel band from New Orleans, the acknowledged home of jazz. That dog just don't hunt, does it? I know many people tried valiantly to maintain the mystic and image of the caribbean, but to little avail. My hat's off to all that served in this great band. During its life, the Band introduced steel band music to thousands in the States that would never had heard this unique art form. Unfortunately, the band has never received acknowledgment for this acheivment.
I have the first 4 recordings by the band. I wll be glad to provide cassette tapes or CD's for any and all that are interested.
