The End Of The U. S. Navy Steel Band
This is the first response to my inquiry into how the Steel Band came to an end. I'll post more as I receive it.
After 42 glorious years in service to its country performing and touring
throughout the United States and many countries of the world, the U.S. Navy
Steel Band was disestablished in October 1999 due to decreased demand and
budgetary concerns. The choice to disband was I'm sure a difficult one for
our leaders to make, but a necessary one.
Currently, the U.S. Navy Steel Band archives are located at building
126, Naval Support Activity, New Orleans, Louisiana. Articles and film
clips are on file. All albums recorded by the band were not for sale but
for use within the scope of Department of Defense activities and were given
away until exhausted. I can't even get one and I am an alumnus of the band.
I performed with them in 1987-1988 and recorded the 30th anniversary album
"Steel Appeal."
Thank you for your interest in the U.S. Navy Steel Band and Navy Music.
If I can be of service to you in the future, please write again.
