History of Company A 1st Bn 94th Armor
Our Hibbing Unit of the Minnesota Army National Guard had its beginnings with the 47th Inf Division on 29 Jan 1947. The Headquarters for the 47th ID was located in Hibbing until 1951 when the Headquarters was moved to St. Paul, MN.
In its place, Hibbing became the Headquarters for the 136th Infantry. National Guard drills were conducted at the Carnigie Library in Old North Hibbing and at the Hibbing Memorial Building. Construction on our present facility at 2310 Brooklyn Drive began in 1955 and the facility was dedicated in April 1956. At that time, Hibbing was the Headquarters for the 1st Bn 136th Inf.
After some years of activation and deactivations, Hibbing became the Headquarters for the 2nd Reconnaissance Squadron of the 194th Armor in 1959. This unit was an element of the 47th ID.
In 1968, the Headquarters for the 2nd Recon Squad of the 194th Armor was moved to Duluth at the Armory on London Road. Hibbing became the Alpha Company element of the 194th Armor. In 1972, the 2nd Recon Squad of the 194th Armor was redesignated as the First Battalion, 94th Armor.
They Headquarters was positioned in Duluth while the Alpha Compnay was positioned in Hibbing. At that time, the 94th Armor Battalion had three line companies: A Co located in Hibbing, B Co was located in Eveleth and C Co was located in Chisholm.
The 94th Armor Battalion had a Support Company located in Virginia, MN while the Headquarters remained in Duluth, MN. In June 1986, Govenor Rudy Perpich designated the 94th Armor Battalion as the "Iron Rangers" Battalion.
In 1991, the Minnesota Army National Guard underwent a repositioning change. First, the colors of the 47th ID were retired and the colors of the 34th (Red Bull) ID were re-activated from Europe.
At that same time, the 1st Bn 94th Armor repositioned is Support Company in Virginia and moved it to Cloquet, MN. It also redesignated it as a Detachment of its Headquarters Company element. Then it moved its Bravo Company in Eveleth and moved it to Pine City, MN. This is when we gained the fourth line company element, Delta Company in Grand Rapids, MN. Both facilities in Virginia and Eveleth were sold to the respective Cities. This left the Charlie element in Chisholm and the Alpha element in Hibbing.
Since then, the Detachement in Cloquet was moved to the Duluth Armory and was no longer designated as a Detachment. This stayed this way for 10 years when, as of 01 Oct 00 the Battalion went through another restructuring. The Army had decided to go back to a Three Line Company Battalion. When all was said and done, the Companies in Chisholm and Hibbing were to be combined into one Super-Company designated as Alpha Company, Bravo Company stayed in Pine City, MN and Delta Company in Grand Rapids, MN was redesignated and Charlie Company. This is the currrent structure to date.
